Jack watched Max pace. The boy looked too pale, too skittish, and Jack had the impression that the moment an opening made itself known, Max would run. Glancing at his watch, Jack sighed. A rep from Social Services was on her way to claim both Max and the fifteen year old boy. But the minutes that ticked by felt like hours. The fifteen year old, David, was more than willing to talk, and he wanted to go home. His parents had been contacted but wouldn't be able to reach him till tomorrow, so David would be placed in a home for the night. Max was another matter. He hadn't said a word since Maggie's.

One good thing had happened, however. Rebecca Nieland was locked up and going down. They had film footage of David and Max on tape being raped. She couldn't deny the truth of that. And David was willing to testify against her so they had a case even without Max. So Jack felt good about that. Now if only he could find a way to help Max.

"What?" Jack looked up to see Officer Marx standing before him.

Marx sighed and jerked a thumb over his shoulder to the man standing at the front desk. "Guy says he's Max's brother, and he has ID proving that Max is eighteen."

Jack was stunned. He rose to his feet and pushed past Marx, making his way to the front desk. Did not like the looks of the guy standing there. Familiar somehow, but Jack couldn't place him. "You're here for Max?" Jack blurted out.

"Yes, I am." Domino replied, adding a smile. He had managed to duck out when the cops had stormed the warehouse, but had kept tabs on Max. Knew the man before him was a cop with way too much interest in the boy. Made Domino want Max back all the more. "Unless he's under arrest...I'd like to take him home now."

"He's not your brother!" Jack hissed, eyes flashing. No way was he going to let this jerk take Max away. Knew who he was now. Domino...street pimp and hustler supreme.

Domino shrugged, holding the other man's gaze. "Prove it." he countered, issuing a challenge.

Jack swallowed a curse and resisted the urge to deck the man. "You have proof that Max is eighteen?" He asked, holding out one hand.

"Of course." Domino replied. He handed over the ID. Lucky for him he'd had it made up the night he had taken possession of Max. Was mentally patting himself on the back right now, for being so wise.

"I need to have this checked out." Jack began, only to have the ID snatched out of his hands by his captain. Made to protest but was shushed by dark eyes.

Captain Torrance turned to Domino and smiled. He knew the hustler well. Knew, also, that they wouldn't be able to prove the ID to be fake. "Max is yours." he said shortly, then he took Jack by the arm and hauled him away.

Jack pulled free and whirled on his captain. "Do you know what that bastard is going to do to Max?" he snarled.

"I know." Capt. Torrance replied, his eyes mirroring the sadness of his voice. He had a son about Max's age. "There's nothing we can do...legally." he stressed.

"But..." Jack began, only to shut up when he realized what Torrance was saying. "Um...can I have a couple of personal days, Cap?" he asked.

Torrance nodded. "I'll take care of the paper work. Just...behave yourself." he cautioned.

Jack smiled. "Will do." With that he headed off to see Max before the boy left. Had to grab the boy by the arm to stop him. "You don't have to do this, Max." Jack whispered. "I can help you."

"I want to go." Max said, his tone void of emotion. Knew he had no choice but to return to Domino. The lives of Jinx and the others were at stake. Pulling free of Jack's grip, Max lowered his head and continued on to fulfill his destiny.

Jack cursed as he watched Domino wrap an arm around Max and haul him off. Waited for ten seconds then grabbed his coat. He was on his own time now and he would keep watch over Max. And, when the time was right, he would get the boy back.
