Isabel dreamt, but not of Alex. She was back in the desert, breathing the clean air. She caught up to Tess, pulling the other blond into her arms. Their clothes vanished either in the manner of dreams or were dissolved through molecular manipulation, Isabel was too far gone to tell.

"You want me?" Tess asked, her lips pressed to Isabel's neck.

        "Yes."

Tess' mouth moved lower, slowly. "Only me?"

Isabel moaned, refused to answer. Tess pulled away. Naked, she started walking into the desert. Isabel ran after her, pulled Tess into her arms. "I need you," she whispered. Her hands and mouth roamed Tess' body. "Don't leave me."

        "But..." Tess pulled free again.

"It doesn't matter. There can still be us."

Tess smiled at last, flung herself at Isabel, and their dream returned to its course. After a while they lay on the soft sand, smiling at each other. Isabel reached for Tess again...

        "Isabel?"

        "Mom?" Isabel looked around.

"It's nearly time for dinner, I wasn't sure if I should let you sleep... dear, are you okay? You look flushed."

"I'm... I'm fine. Really." I can't take a nap without cheating on Alex... I haven't even been dating him a full day! But it's just a dream does it count? What if it isn't just a dream?

        "Are you sure?"

        "Yeah."

"Why don't you come down. We eat in a few minutes."

Isabel came down, but she was snappish and irritable the rest of the evening until she could return to bed. Especially when Max questioned her about Tess again.

"So what did Tess tell you? Why are we on Earth?"

        "We didn't get to that."

        "Are our parents alive?"

        "She didn't say, really."

Max was getting frustrated. "What did you spend all that time talking about?"

        "Girl stuff."

        "Girl stuff?"

"Yeah! She's my friend, Max. That's the important thing. That she's an Alien is... incidental. Stop obsessing." Isabel flounced off to bed. Before falling asleep, she made a resolution to herself.

I won't dream of Tess. I'm going to dream about Alex all night. Tess is my friend, she's going to tell me all about what it means to be Alien. Alex is my boyfriend. That's all there is too it.
