Max and Isabel returned home quietly.
"You were way out of line there, Max. Shoving her around like that."
"She's been messing with our heads!"
"Are you sure of that?" Isabel questioned. "She probably has been... but she's scared and lonely. You didn't have to make it worse."
"So now I'm the bad guy? If Tess didn't make us kiss her, then you've been cheating on Alex. Have you told him yet?"
"I haven't had a chance."
"So you wanted to kiss Tess?" Max questioned again.
"Honey?" Max and Isabel looked up. They hadn't even heard their parents come in. "Is everything okay?"
"Yeah." Isabel tried to escape to her room, but her mom followed.
"Isabel, we need to talk." Isabel was silent. "I heard what Max asked you. You kissed Tess?"
"Yeah," Isabel mumbled.
Dianne sat on the bed and put an arm around her daughter. "It's okay... I just wish you'd felt you could tell me and your father. How long have you known that you're, um..."
"Bi," Isabel interjected. "I don't know... anyway, Tess and I just kissed. I'm dating Alex."
"Oh good. I mean, uh, I like him."
"He's a great guy." Isabel glanced at her mother. "I don't know how to tell him. I didn't mean for this to happen... with Tess, I mean. I was just going to talk to her, and then we were kissing, then Max and Liz burst in on us. I don't know what to do. Alex and Tess both want me to date them... I can't bear to hurt either of them."
"Yeah, this is tough." Her mother remembered something. "How long have you been dating Alex?"
"Since, well, yesterday. It took me a long time to be sure of what I want, and I am. I just want Tess to!"
Dianne didn't know how to answer her daughter's outburst. She just held Isabel and made soothing noises while she tried to think how to help her daughter.
